Who We Are & What Do We Want?
Welcome to The Wooden Box Gallery
a new independent Artist led gallery at 92 High Street, Ramsgate, Kent - just down the road from the train station;
You'll pass us as you walk to the beach!
We opened in December 2022 after an extensive and thorough refit, where we worked hard to change an empty shop into a nice sparkly white box complete with good lighting, an easy to use hanging system and beautifully flat walls. Basically we wanted to create a space artist's of all abilities, ages, backgrounds and reasons for making work felt like they could show their work, talk about their work, promote their work & sell their work. Equally important to us was that passers by & visitors to the gallery were entertained, excited and engaged in the work, ideas, skills or aesthetic of the work on show.
With a drive to be exclusively inclusive, The Wooden Box Gallery is bridging the gap between amateur & professional, young & old, experienced & emerging, inside & outside or contemporary & traditional artists, makers, curators & collectors. And we are very proud to feature & showcase work that is exciting, inspirational, thought provoking & innovative as well as work that embraces different skill sets, themes, ways of working and stories to tell.
We are open to having a chat to all people, about all ideas, plans &
Artists - If you are looking for a 9.5m X 5.5m gallery space that has various options for different ways of exhibiting your work, whether it be taking over the whole space, hiring a wall or being part of a group show then please feel free to browse the website or call into the space for a look, chat & see what how The Wooden Box Gallery can help you show your work, increase your profile & build your network of collectors.
If you are an Artist who wants to be brave & push yourself; who is unapologetic in their creative journey whether it is driven by self expression, mastering skills, overcoming hardships or fulfilling a creative urge then & you want to document & show your journey creating a life for themselves ambitious endeavours or skill - seeds may be sown that self expression and creative boundary pushing is a positive dynamic outlet. I know it is easy to be confident, driven & excited by your own creativity when you are established and successful, therefore the WBG has set out to find and champion talented artists who are starting out, working in secret, who have tried to walk away or are yet to find their voice.
Curators - We at The Wooden Box Gallery are excited by excited people, so if you have a plan, an idea or a bit of dream to create & curate a show of your choosing, where you get to call the shots and your creative decisions become a reality for audiences to enjoy & engage with, then please get in touch to discuss how we can support you in making your ideas a reality. We whether you are an established curator, artist, researcher or community leader or if you are making your curatorial debut as a student oBy featuring
With special focus & the spotlight on young* talent, the WBG offers opportunities to help young* artists, curators & researchers as they learn their craft & understand their own ways of planning, producing, exhibiting, discussing & developing their work. *The WBG uses the term young not just as a marker of age but rather as a marker of attitude, energy, curiosity & hope. Therefore, alongside the students of local schools & colleges, the WBG encourages applications for shows from artists of any age & experience who have the desire to make & show novel, dynamic work.
The WBG is a living, breathing work in progress; evolving as we learn what works, what is needed, what is possible and most importantly what feels good! The WBG currently has options for full or partial gallery hire; available for individuals, groups & touring shows to reserve. Also for hire, is a photography studio, a dark room & a 'dirty studio' (to make messy work in). Plus private space for vlogging, podcasts and counselling/therapy sessions as well as communal space for workshops, events, meetings and Artist's Talks.
People ask why the name "The Wooden Box" ?
Many important, personal & precious things have been kept in a wooden box; a container made from a once living tree; chosen, felled, cut & crafted. Deeds of houses, Wills, Marriage Certificates, family photos, love letters, children's first drawings & locks of hair, all kept together within a wooden box. Delicate fruits, when ripe are placed within wooden boxes for protection & transportation to market. Fancy pants wine is laid down in a humble wooden box, affording it time for change and maturity. However, all that being said; we all, will end up in a wooden box of one kind or another.
The name The Wooden Box Gallery serves as a exultant reminder, that what we do before we end up in that final wooden box is very special, exciting and up to US!
